LinkedIn people search reads boolean operators in the keyword box: quotation marks pin an exact phrase, OR widens a group of synonyms, AND joins two different ideas, and NOT strips out the noise. Most searches fail for one of two reasons. Typed as a single long phrase they match almost nobody, and typed as loose words they match everybody with a pulse. This builder assembles the string the way the operators expect: your titles become one quoted OR group, your keywords become a second group joined with AND, and every exclusion lands in a NOT group at the end. How to build a people search that returns the right humans
- Group synonyms with OR, never with AND. A person is a VP of Sales or a Head of Sales, never both at once, so an AND between two titles returns almost nobody.
- Quote every phrase of two words or more. Without quotation marks, head of sales matches profiles where head, of and sales appear scattered anywhere on the page.
- Use AND only between genuinely different ideas, such as a title group AND an industry keyword. That is the join that takes a list from thousands down to a few hundred real candidates.
- Push seniority noise into the NOT group. Assistant, intern, coordinator and recruiter strip out most of the false positives that title matching alone drags into a sales search.
- Let the filters do the filtering. Location, current company, industry and connection degree belong in LinkedIn's dropdowns, where they are structured data rather than text your string has to guess at.
- Iterate after the first hundred results. Every search teaches you two titles you had not thought of and one you should drop, and the second version always beats the first.

- How do I search for people on LinkedIn?
- Type your terms into the search box at the top of the page, press Enter, then click the People tab so everything that is not a person drops away. - Does LinkedIn support boolean search operators?
